The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party on Thursday disowned the party’s former local
government council chairmanship candidates who recently endorsed
Governor Ibikunle Amosun for a second term in office.
The PDP described Amosun’s endorsement
by the ex-council chairmanship flagbearers as a “smokescreen” just as a
member of the state House of Assembly representing Ipokia constituency
on the platform of the party, Abiodun Akovoyon denied defecting to the
Labour Party.
Twelve former PDP council chairmanship
candidates had on Wednesday in Abeokuta, announced their defection to
the newly registered All Progressives Congress. They also endorsed the
governor for another fresh term.
But the PDP in a statement yesterday by
its State Publicity Secretary, Waliu Oladipupo in Abeokuta, said said
that the former candidates were not on the list of its flagbearers for
the last council poll in the state.
The party described the action of the former council candidates as “arrangee endorsements.”
“These people were not at any time
chairmanship candidates of the PDP in Ogun State. It is part of the
desperate politics of endorsement and validation being played by Amosun.
“These people are not known to us. They
are impostors. They do not belong to the list submitted to the Ogun
State Independent Electoral Commission by the authentic state executive
committee of the PDP, under the leadership of Mr. Adebayo Dayo. Perhaps,
they are part of the fifth columnists we said are working for Amosun’s
re-election.”
